It all starts at Halifax Resolves Days: Prelude to Revolution, beginning a multi-year journey to America 250 NC, which observes America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the development of a new nation dedicated to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

DNCR will kick off America 250 NC at Historic Halifax with three days of educational and exciting events, as well as many opportunities to learn how North Carolina and its people played a role in shaping our country.

Key Weekend Events:

• Halifax Resolves Day Ceremony with Kickoff by Tryon Palace Fife & Drum Corp
• Reception at Bradford-Denton House
• Free concert by The Chatham Rabbits in front of the Historic Courthouse
• Fireworks display to officially kick off American 250 NC
• Ceremony at Magazine Spring, led by the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe
• African American & Indigenous Patriots of the Revolutionary War in NC
• Arrival of troops on King Street, historic weapons demonstration, living history vignettes, and more!

The national 250th anniversary will be commemorated in 2026; however, given North Carolina’s rich history in our nation’s founding, we will be using the next two years to recognize our state’s significance in the events leading up to 1776. We will reflect upon our country’s founding ideals and explore the pivotal events, places, and voices that have shaped and continue to shape our state and country from the Halifax Resolves to the civil rights movement and beyond.

On April 12, 1776 the North Carolina Provincial Congress passed a set of resolutions that empowered North Carolina’s representatives attending the Continental Congress in Philadelphia to vote for independence from Great Britain. Later known as the Halifax Resolves, it paved the way for North Carolina’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The Halifax Resolves are generally considered the first official act of any colony recommending independence from Great Britain.
