Dear Future County Committee Participant –
The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) is leading the statewide effort to plan for the commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. Our goal is to energize robust, comprehensive, and inclusive programs across ALL of North Carolina.
North Carolina will commemorate the 250th with wide-ranging activities across a multi-year commemoration beginning April 12, 2024, with a focus on 2026. Additional events will continue through 2033 to reflect our state’s Revolutionary history. DNCR activities will include educational outreach for schools and families, online resources, traveling exhibits, and a variety of events.
The heart of the America 250 commemoration programming lies within the local county committees. These committees should consist of individuals who are dedicated to planning and organizing events, projects, and initiatives at the grassroots level. To form an official America 250 NC county committee, we ask that the official county committee designate a liaison to work with the North Carolina America 250 team within the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. That liaison will serve as the local contact with statewide leadership, participate in planning events, and communicate regularly on activities occurring within the county. For counties that form an official America 250 NC committee, as evidenced by the passing of a resolution of support and designation of a local contact, the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources may provide grant funding opportunities for a wide array of commemorative programs and activities. These funds are available in fiscal year 2023-2024.
We encourage all counties to include diverse perspectives and voices from a variety of sectors, including government, cultural heritage institutions, non-profits, tourism departments, libraries, schools and colleges, genealogical groups, and civic organizations. The committees will serve as the driving force behind the commemoration of our state's long history of independent thought and achievement.
